Not sure what strip you are using, but look over this thread as I just connected up a CCT white strip that uses WS2811 chips and it worked easily. Because there are two different voltages, you do need to insure the ground (and only the ground) from the 5V and 24V power supplies are connected for a common reference.
That said, the sliders/controls in the WLED UI are oriented toward color, but using/enabling the RGB sliders makes dealing with this pretty easy and it sounds like the next release of the 0.14 beta is going to address the UI parts with better “addressable white strip” support in the UI.
But physically, as long as you can roll with the UI being a little odd for it, the WLED drives such strips pretty easily.
