It is part of computer RAM dedicated for program data.
The other is stack that shares the same area.
Heap grows from bottom up, stack from top down.
The only way to increase it is to reduce program size or increase RAM.
You need it as much as program needs it. Minimum free (as reported by WLED) is about 12k for normal operation. Anything below that may cause unexpected reset (crash) or behaviour.
