Make my PCs LEDs controllable with WLED?

I have a phanteks p350x PC case it has led strips… Also have a ESP 8266 with wled installed on it.

The led controller of the pc case has a “input” that can be connented to motherboard for led control. The led mode button switches between phanteks controller and motherboard (no motherboard connected the leds are off i think)

I wonder if i could hook the ESP to the input, instead of the motherboard addressable Pins. In the picture you can see my try. (Get 5v Form power supply connection for the ESP and input port)

But somehow it has not worked like that. Only fist led lit up and wled not reachable over network… was it not necessary to connecting the 2 ground traces = the black wire not needed. so would the red cable alone be enough because it is grounded through the case controller?

as ne user i can only inclede one pic…

another question i have do i need a resistor on the data pin with this setup? there are lot resistors on this board?
