Power Question about Athom ESP32 LED Controller with 2x5m WS2815

Hi there,
I‘m not an expert when it comes to electrical knowledge, so excuse me if that´s dumb idea in general:

When using 2x 5m WS2815 12v strips on the below esp32 controller, do i need necessarily a seperate power injection, or could both strips get their power through the controller, if an sufficent power supply is attached?
If that´s a bad idea, what would happen? Will the controller or the power supply get dangerously hot? Will the LEDs be damaged?

The strips will only be used for colored ambient lightning (no RGB white) and not at full brightness

Thanks for some suggestions,
Philipp

The “Laws” of WLED projects:

  • Power for your LEDs comes from the Power Supply via appropriate wiring.
  • Data for your LEDs comes from your Data Supply (ESP) via appropriate wiring.
  • Appropriate wiring for Power is not the same as for Data and vice versa.

In general, consider your LED power wiring as completely separate from the wiring to power the ESP. For very small setups (30 LEDs or so), it may be possible to do wire power from the PS to the ESP and then on to the LEDs. That’s not generally a good idea, especially as your need for LED’s tends to grow and the power wiring often doesn’t.

If you keep your ESP as a Data Supply and your PS as a Power Supply, you don’t need to worry about “overloading” the ESP. You will have to choose the PS to match what youll need to drive the total # of LEDs you expect to have.
