I’m looking to build some solar powered units with a couple of 18650’s, has anyone done the same?

I’ve got some of these solar boards, which turn the load off during charging, then power on at night - but im having issues. I ran one with a D1 Mini, directly connected to an 18650 and it seemed to work for a day or two - but it seems the D1 Mini needed power cutting and reapplying before it would boot WLED, so it never came back on after charging.
Reading more i believe i need a BMS with this board - so i wan to connect it an 18650 battery shield.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, trying to build a few of these to leave in tribute to a friend who recently passed away.
