If I change the sync port on one system, then select a color on another unit, they are still syncing.
Do I not understand this correctly?

When the port is changed reboot and try again.
I’m not sure if the port is changed it will be done in realtime.
When this not works we have to use e.g. Wireshark to check the two WLED ip’s to see which ports are used as request and as answer.
