I understand the concept of “Segments” and using additional “Data Pins”…. When would one choose to use an additional data pin??
You might use an extra GPIO if your physical layout didn’t lend itself to joining two or more strips via wiring.
Alternately, you might split the number of LEDs on one GPIO to improve the update speed of WLED.

Using multiple GPIO can improve FPS if you have larger number of LEDs.
If you split up your LEDs with multiple gpio pins, you can also easily add a few more power injections to prevent voltage drop.
