I just bought a MagWLED board. When I first got it, I tried to update the firmware like the five other MagWLED boards I own. However, this newest board failed to update to 0.15.0 using Home Assistant.
So, to troubleshoot it further, I was able to re-flash 0.14.4 to get WiFi working using:
Whenever I try to update the board using “install.magwled.com”, it breaks the WiFi if I update it to 0.15.0. But downgrading the board back to 0.14.4 re-enables WiFi.
While that made it work again, I need to get 0.15.0 going, as I now depend on many features, like the profile boot selection.
I’m starting to wonder if I have a bad board, as I’ve never had this problem with any other MagWLED board.
the design may be missing a decent capacitor. are you able to make modifications to the board?
can you set it to AP mode and get access that way?
if you can get into AP mode: try lowering the TX power in wifi settings to minimum (for starts, then try increasing it in steps if that works)
The weird thing is, I can interact with it like usual and even have it join my WiFi, but ONLY if I’m on 0.14.4. But if I upgrade to 0.15.0, it breaks the board’s ability to use WiFi. I have five other MagWLED boards that do this just fine, and with the 5 other MagWLED boards, upgrading to 0.15.0 went flawlessly.
I just tried setting the default brightness to 8 and then upgrading to 0.15.0. It still breaks WiFi for the MagWLED board and becomes unresponsive if I upgrade to 0.15.0. (yet still works for 0.14.4) I will contact the MagWLED people; maybe my board is defective.
Note: I’m in touch with MagWLED support. I’ll update this post with what happens.
After contacting their support (info@magwled.com), I also went to my original order and requested a return. The support email people were very friendly. After I described all the troubleshooting I had done, they agreed that the board was defective and shipped me a replacement MagWLED board. I’m sure the next board will work fine, so I’m very happy with them!
