WLED Web Interface Unreachable

Hello Everyone,

I am new to WLED and have installed it on 3 ESP 32 everything works fine with the local AP but when it comes to connect as a client it is impossible to reach the web interface.

The device connect to the router, have an IP sometimes it even gets to the 'Loading WLED UI…" but then it gets stuck there.

Have reflashed it several times and have tried with 3 different ESPes but cannot find a way to solve the issue. I have read that others have experienced the same.

Even the app discovers the WLED but then it gets stuck on the loading page.

UPDATE

I have made a test using a hotspot and it works like a charm so the issue must be modem related and related configuration. Not really into networking though

Do you have any workaround to offer?

Connect in AP mode and in the Wifi settings, scroll down and make sure disable wifi sleep is checked.

Does your router broadcast separate 5ghz and 2.4ghz hosts? If you have band steering enabled in your router and it auto selects what band to put devices on sometimes that can be an issue. Best to turn off band steering in your routers settings.

Last thing are you close enough to your router? See if you can access the controller(s) while in the same room as the router.

I was actually playing with it and have managed to make it a bit better by unchecking ‘disable wifi sleep’. I have now managed to reach the devices but it still feels unstable.

I have also applied static IP to see if that somehow improves the situation.

I have a router provided by the ISP VF and to be honest there is not much to play with (or at least that my little knowledge allows me to play with) - I have not seeing anything regarding the band steering - Gigabox THG3000

Thank you very much for your help. Will try and play a bit more during the weekend as I need to install the LED strip. Will keep you posted

I have had similar issues with some lights in the garden, where the controllers are in a shed (foil lined for temperature reasons), The connections were sometimes flaky and could time out.

I have ethernet in the shed so I bought a cheap £30 travel router/hotspot and set up a local hotspot for the shed, and all working fine now. Also, I now have a better wifi connection in the shed for my phone too.

Little Update… unfortunately I am more and more confused most likely because I do not have the knowledge to properly troubleshoot however, I am back to basic. It worked for a little while and then it goes back to been unreachable. By doing several attempts I manage to reconnect but it doesn’t last long.

Also another thing that confuses me is that I have a LED strip attached via USB. It works for a while then it becomes unreachable. If I disconnect the LED strip and only try and connect to the ESP32 via WLED interface, it connects straight away.

Could it be the wires between ESP and LED? Not sure very confused indeed

How many LEDs are you connecting to the ESP?
One of the 1st things to isolate out are power supply issues.

See if you can power the LEDs from a separate 5V supply than the ESP, make sure there is a common ground line from the ESP to the LEDs.

That’s over and above whatever you do with the 2 different power supplies.

It sounds like you’re facing a router compatibility issue. Here are some potential workarounds:

  1. Router Settings: Check if your router has any settings related to firewall, AP isolation, or client isolation. Disabling these might help.

  2. DHCP Settings: Ensure your router’s DHCP server is enabled and properly assigning IP addresses.

  3. Wi-Fi Channel: Sometimes, changing the Wi-Fi channel on your router can improve connectivity. Try switching to a less crowded channel.

  4. Firmware Update: Make sure your router’s firmware is up to date, as outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues.

  5. Quality of Service (QoS): If your router has QoS settings, try disabling them to see if that helps with the connection.

  6. Static IP: Try setting a static IP for your ESP32 in the router’s settings to see if that improves stability.

Let me know if any of these work for you!

Than you very much. I will try all that again and see how it goes.

Considering you have been so helpful I have one more question as a newbie who knows close to nothing about electronics.

I have a bunch of little projects around WLED and adding a power supply for each of them is sometimes not feasible. My question is the following if I use a controller like this one Athom Controller and leave the WLED maximum current to 850 mA is it safe to run say a strip with 100LED for a lamp via USB?

I do not mind at all if the LED are a bit dimmer than they should be, my only concern is that is safe and they won’t catch on fire.

Please let me know your thoughts

Have a great one
