SK6812 working only with WS281x

Hi!
I have installed my first WLED with an ESP32 and a RGB led strip SK6812. Strangely everything works apparently well if I select WS281x in the configurations, but if I select SK6812 RGBW it looks like a rainbow with LEDs getting alternate colors in solid mode… Is this normal?
I notice that may SK6812 packaging has written RGB and not RGBW, is there SK6812 non RGBW?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes there is an RGB only version of the SK6812, which amounts to a “tuned timing” version of the WS281x.
As far as WLED is concerned, they’re just WS281x.

You get multi-colours using the SK6812 because it’s sending 32bits/LED not 24. The extras overflow into the next pixel and make things confused.

Thanks for your explanation! So I can just keep using the WS281x configuration, right?

Yup, should be fine.
Some of the manufacturers are pretty liberal with their use of the term SK6812, trying to make people think their getting RGBW at a great deal. As always, you’ve got to read the fine print…
