Will this light strip work on WLED?

New here and not sure if this is the correct category for this question. Purchased RGBIC Permanent Outdoor lights on Amazon

They were cheap, and now I know why. The lights seem ok, just the control is not that good.. The yellow is a pale green and not much for animation control.

I found WLED and want that kind of control, only not sure if this strip will work with the WLED set up. The App lists this strip as WS2812B and the package shows RGBIC.

After installing the lights I had 2 partial strips left over along with 2 power adapters and control modules. Of course the remotes (useless in my opinion). These run on 24 volts, and have 3 wires.

Have not been able to find this strip in a search on the net, so not sure of just what it is. The RGB LED is mounted on a PCB and appears to have some SMDs. I do have some experience with electronics (hobby) and always eager to learn.

Can anyone advise?

Thank you in advance for entertaining my request and any responses to direct.

It will likely work. Set protocol to ws281x

Thank you for the encouraging response.

If I may, I have a few questions regarding ESP-32D and programming.

The ESP-32D that I have purchased has a different pinout and labeling. And in the instructions this is given: “For ESP32 use GPIO16 (or IO16 or G16); GPIOs 4, 13 and 16-33 can be used, other pins are not recommended.”

The ESP-32D I have shows GIOP pins which I assume are the same, only letters rearranged.

GIOP16 on my board is listed as RX2. That does not seem to me to be a correct connection for data to be sent to Level Shifter. Is this the correct pin? Or am I correct in my assumption? I am looking at the pin called in the instructions D13 which on my board is labeled P13-ADC14-Touch4. Would that be a good pin for data transfer to Level Shifter?

I am confident the remaining connections are correct even though the pins are arranged differently, they are labeled similarly.

Any recommendations are welcomed as this is my first venture into the world of ESP-32.

Oh, and as for the programming. Some may call me weary, but I am not liking the use of Chrome or Edge browsers. I use Firefox, which is not supported here. What would be my best option for programming? I have read through the installation post. With that, option 1 would be not favored. Option 2 esptool seems to be an open option. Then option 3 would be out due to using ESP-32. Option 4 OTA update sounds like another option. I do have 2 versions of Arduino IDE. Not sure of ESP8266 core, I would think it is not there. How could that be checked?

And which would be the best option?

Again, thank you in advance for any direction.

You should be able to use gpio 16. You should be able to use anything listed in the table here as Green (unless it says input only): ESP32 Pinout Reference: Which GPIO pins should you use? | Random Nerd Tutorials

If you have windows you have Edge, I don’t see why it would be a problem to open Edge and use it only to flash the board. What do you think is going to happen lol?

The next easiest way to flash the board would be to download the .bin file and flash it with Srg74’s Esp-Flasher: Flasher moved to firmware folder · srg74/WLED-wemos-shield@5f8a9b0 · GitHub

OK, decided to put a little trust into Edge. Finally got the ESP board driver installed and recognized in the installer. Clicked the install button and it has been erasing for about 10 minutes now.

Is this a normal?

You might need to hold the boot button on the Esp when you start the install.

Try flashing it here: https://wled-install.github.io/

Jinx found a couple informative posts regarding this. Thank you for pointing me in the direction :^)

Have attempted multiple times to install to my ESP board. At first it was not recognized. Made it past that and now it is recognized (and using Edge browser) open Install WLED and click on install (0.15.3 Plain) holding boot button on ESP32 (have tried variations of when to press and how long to hold) I see what I perceive as my board in a pop up window showing CP2102 USB to UART Bridge Controller (COM$) - paired. When I select this it turns blue and connect button enables. After clicking connect I get another pop up window WLED. There within are 2 options Istall WLED and Logs & Console, clicking Install WLED another pop up appears Confirm Installation displaying Do you want to install WLED 0.15.3/2507260? All data on device will be erased. Clicking install brings another pop up Installing with clearing installation with blue rotating wheel, the erasing. then it does not progress from there, even after 3 days. The red LED on the ESP dev board is lit solid and does not do anything different during this process.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

dont use edge, use chrome.

Loaded Chrome browser, entered site, clicked install, attempted all previous mentioned steps. Still get stuck on “erasing”. Is it possible the ESP dev board is defective?

Have attempted with 2 different browsers. Is it possible a different method would be better?

Ok, so today gave the thought that perhaps my Dev board was not good and that the possibility that having the board connected may have something to do with my dilemma.

While having 3 boards (got 3 when ordered) decided to try another board. Connected the board without anything else and it loaded the WLED code!

On the first attempt the progress indicator was to about 46% and the board was lost. Attempted to reconnect and was not able. Rebooted my PC and gave it another try and was successful. Though my other browser (Firefox) was now not functioning. Lost the history as well.

Well now to get this set up, that will be a later thing as there is much to get done today. Happy New Year!

Wow,

Found that connecting board to PC without being on breadboard for other connections works to load and communicate with board via PC or App.

Once the board is on the bread board the communication is lost. Not sure why yet, used the directions to connect from the site. May have made a connection incorrectly… will be investigating. Mean while if anyone might have a suggestion, it would be welcomed.

Thank you all for entertaining my inquisitiveness

Yes always flash the board with everything disconnected.

Watch out for unintended consequences when adding bread board connections for testing stuff.

One of the classics is using GPIO12 as an output, having everything work fine and then finding out the board will no longer boot - because GPIO12 needs to be floating or low on boot.

This: ESP32 pinout is a good description of the pins and their usage/issues.

Hi divsys,

I am using GPIO16 as output, that has been triple checked.

Have not had the opportunity to recheck all my connections, all that has been confirmed is that when the dev board is placed in the bread board circuit it becomes non communicable. Once removed communications restore. That indicates to me that something (connection) on the bread board is causing this to occur.

After disconnecting everything from the dev board except 5 volt and ground it has been determined that the dev board will only connect when USB cable to PC is connected. Have tested voltage with both connected and it is identical, ruling out voltage variables.

It appears that the dev board only connects through the PC.

Have determined that connection is only through PC. The app performs well as long as dev board is connected to PC. Once PC is disconnected communication is lost in app.

Once connection is re-established with PC, restarting app and connection is returned with dev board.

Am I missing something in the set up? Or is there a problem with the dev board? I have tested 2 boards and they react the same.

1 issue… on the pallet, red is green and green is red. What shows as red on the app is displayed as green and what is green on the app is displayed as red on the LED’s.

Can this be corrected?

And yet to look at why the boards do not connect without PC… suggestions there would be welcomed.

Thank you all for your advice.

Ok, found the correction for red and green issue. It was in settings. Went from order GRB to RGB.
