Conversion of 2D Pebble Matrix from USB controller to WLED

Has anyone reverse engineered how LED curtain hooks work?

I hooked up a logic analyser to the original controller, and every 20 leds, I can clearly see a logic high pulse that is ~5uS long. This is out of spec for the LEDs, so they ignore it, but it’s pretty likely that this is the signal to tell the chips in the hook to direct the next data stream down to the next hook. Sounds to me like maybe you have a bad curtain. Does it work with the controller it came with?

Or maybe the ones with the chips don’t work, though I seem to recall people using them.
