I would also try setting it for something like 10 LEDs to see if you can get 10 of them working.
If they do, then you likely are dealing with an inadequate power issue. Could be due to not turning off the brightness limiter or setting it to a higher value and or not injecting power at the far end of the strip. Hard to say w/out seeing your settings.

I spent a good 3 hours by the end of it, trying to get the controller to operate the strip. I must have tried every setting possible, but I couldnt get anything to happen on the strip. Effects…colour changes, nothing worked, except power on/off. Just a few LEDs were lit.
I gave up on it, but as a last ditch effort, ordered a new strip…exactly the same strip I already had. It arrived, I plugged in, and it worked absolutly perfectly…straight away. I dont know why the first strip didnt work, I can only assume a manufacture fault.
